Online pre-registration
Online pre-registration is an important first step that all of our new students need to take.
What is pre-registration?
Online pre-registration:
- allows you to confirm your personal and academic information.
- provides you with the terms and conditions related to your studies.
- gives you information about your course and fees.
- offers the opportunity to opt-in to receiving communications from the University such as important updates and information.
- enables you to share your details with our support services to help you through your studies.
- creates your IT account for login to University services (Complete all fields, then accept terms and conditions).
With each student completing pre-registration, the University collects all the necessary data for its statutory return.
When do I complete my pre-registration?
You will receive an email letting you know pre-registration is open after you have accepted your place at University.
Please complete online pre-registration as soon as and as accurately as possible.
How do I complete my pre-registration?
Before you start pre registration you will need:
- Your University number (you can find this on all correspondence from the University and in the first welcome emails)
- A photo of yourself for your campus card (see full details below)
- Documents as proof of your eligibility to study (see details below)
- Accurate emergency contact details (it is possible to make amendments throughout your studies if these change for any reason)
- Accurate home address details (to the best of your ability, it is possible to make amendments throughout your studies if these change for any reason)
As part of your pre-registration, you will be required to disclose any relevant criminal convictions.
We advise you to re-visit course pages prior to completing pre-registration, as you may need to make amendments to module titles, content, and availability.
Pre-registration instructions
You can pre-register by following these instructions:
- Go to Surrey Self-Service.
- If you have previously accessed the applicant portal you can log in with these details. Otherwise follow the 'New user' instructions when prompted. You can find your University number on all correspondence from the University. The username and password you used to pre-register will be the same ones you need to access your IT account, so take note of both somewhere safe.
- Click on ‘Registration’ and complete the required steps. Please complete each step as accurately as possible, you cannot edit the form after submitting it. If you cannot see the option to pre-register when visiting Surrey Self-Service please wait 24 to 48 hours.
- On completion of online pre-registration, you’ll receive your ‘Confirmation of pre-registration’ via email, which you can either print or save to your phone. Please bring this along to your main registration and campus card collection session when you arrive on campus.
Request a campus card
Once you have completed pre-registration and accessed and protected your IT account, you can submit a campus card request form to have your card produced and printed for collection at the Library.
Eligibility to study
UK and Irish students
We are required to make sure all our students are eligible to study in the UK. We’re asking for UK and Irish nationals to upload documents as part of pre-registration, which will be stored securely on your student record.
To show your right to study, you will be required to upload one of the following documents:
- UK or Republic of Ireland passport – specifically the photo page where nationality is shown. Please upload a clear copy, with none of the important information obscured
- Irish national identity card
- Birth certificate (if you are British but do not hold a passport).
Unfortunately, we cannot accept a driving licence as evidence of your eligibility to study.
Make sure you upload a document you will be able to bring with you to main registration as we will need to verify this – it must be valid and ideally shouldn’t expire before the start of your course.
If you’re not able to upload a document, we’ll need to take a scan in Welcome Week, which may delay the completion of your main registration.
European and international students
In the Passport and Visa section of pre-registration please check that we have the correct details listed as follows;
- Passport – check that the details listed are up to date, and correct any blanks or errors.
- Visa – check that the details listed are up to date. If there are errors, or information is missing, please follow the instructions in the pre-registration system as appropriate.
You must then make sure that you bring your passport and visa documents with you to registration for verification.
Do I need to have a University IT account to complete pre-registration?
Your IT account will be automatically created after successfully completing online pre-registration. The username and password you used to set up pre-registration will be the same ones you need to access your IT account, so take note of both somewhere safe.
Please wait 24 – 48 hours after successfully completing pre-registration before logging into your IT account.
You will need to set up security features and self-service password reset on your IT account before you can fully access University emails, download our MySurrey App on your phone and access IT services and systems.
Access and protect your IT account
You can also find further support with your IT account or password on the IT pages of the MySurrey website.
